RESUMO

The electric field-assisted composting system (EACS) is an emerging technology that can enhance composting efficiency, but little attention has been given to electrode materials. Herein, an EACS was established to investigate the effects of electrode materials on humic substance formation and heavy metal speciation. Excitation-emission matrix analysis showed that carbon-felt and stainless-steel electrodes increased humic acid (HA) by 48.57 % and 47.53 %, respectively. In the EACS with the carbon-felt electrode, the bioavailability factors (BF) of Cu and Cr decreased by 18.00 % and 7.61 %, respectively. Despite that the stainless-steel electrodes decreased the BF of As by 11.26 %, the leaching of Cr, Ni, Cu, and Fe from the electrode itself is an inevitable concern. Microbial community analyses indicated that the electric field increased the abundance of Actinobacteria and stimulated the multiplication of heavy metal-tolerant bacteria. Redundancy analysis indicates that OM, pH, and current significantly affect the evolution of heavy metal speciation in the EACS. This study first evaluated the metal leaching risk of stainless-steel electrode, and confirmed that carbon-felt electrode is environment-friendly material with high performance and low risk in future research with EACS.

RESUMO

While seeking advice can be beneficial for advisees, advisors may not always possess the necessary knowledge to provide appropriate guidance. Poor-quality advice can mislead advisees rather than offering assistance. Despite the research interest in advisees, few studies have investigated advisors' psychological and behavioral responses, especially when they faced uncertainty regarding the optimal course of action for advisees. To fill this gap, we developed novel paradigms aiming at manipulating advisors' uncertainty, allowing for a systematic investigation of advisors' behavior, motivation, and emotion. Across four studies, we consistently found that advisors under uncertainty give less advice. Furthermore, we observed that uncertainty modulates advisors' motivation to influence, worry about harm to others, and/or sense of power. The motivation to influence and/or worry about harm to others can mediate the effect of uncertainty on advice giving. Besides, we identified nuanced distinctions in the effects of ambiguity and risk, two distinct types of uncertainty, on advisors' psychological processes. Our findings shed light on advisors' self-monitoring of the quality of their advice, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding of advisor-advisee communication from the perspective of advisors.

RESUMO

Novel tourmaline-biochar composites (TBs) were synthesized by introducing tourmaline (TM) into pomelo peel biochar (BC). The surface properties of TBs and BC were studied and the adsorption performances for Pb2+ were investigated. Compared to pristine BC, the adsorption ability for Pb2+ on TBs was enhanced with the increase of TM in TBs, and up to 514.62 mg/g on 5%TB. The enrichment of inorganic metals caused by TM in TBs made the precipitation and cation ion exchange become the main mechanisms in adsorbing Pb2+, and the amounts of adsorbing Pb2+ by those two mechanisms on TBs were 1.10-1.48 times and 1.20-1.30 times those of BC, respectively. Furthermore, applying TBs to practical contaminated soil increased the soil pH and electrical conductivity (EC) after 15 days of incubation. The increased content of residual-Pb and reduced exchangeable-Pb and DTPA-Pb indicated that TBs were favorable for the immobilization of Pb in soil. This study gives a new perspective on the synthesis of tourmaline-biochar composite and their application in Pb-polluted water and soil.

RESUMO

The combined application of metasurface and terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy techniques has received considerable attention in the fields of sensing and detection. However, to detect trace samples, the THz wave must still be enhanced locally using certain methods to improve the detection sensitivity. In this study, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a fano resonance metasurface-based silver nanoparticles (FaMs-AgNPs) sensor. AgNPs can enhance the sensitivity of the sensor by generating charge accumulation and inducing localized electric field enhancement through the tip effect, thereby enhancing the interaction between the THz waves and analytes. We investigated the effects of four different contents of AgNPs, 10 µl, 20 µl, 30 µl and 40 µl, on the detection of acetamiprid. At 30 µl of AgNPs, the amplitude change of the FaMs-AgNPs sensor was more pronounced and the sensitivity was higher, which could detect acetamiprid solutions as low as 100 pg/ml. The FaMs-AgNPs sensor has the advantages of a simple structure, easy processing, and excellent sensing performance, and has a great potential application value in the field of THz trace detection and other fields.

RESUMO

Metals and metalloids are used as weapons for predatory feeding by unicellular eukaryotes on prokaryotes. This review emphasizes the role of metal(loid) bioavailability over the course of Earth's history, coupled with eukaryogenesis and the evolution of the mitochondrion to trace the emergence and use of the metal(loid) prey-killing phagosome as a feeding strategy. Members of the genera Acanthamoeba and Dictyostelium use metals such as zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu), and possibly metalloids, to kill their bacterial prey after phagocytosis. We provide a potential timeline on when these capacities first evolved and how they correlate with perceived changes in metal(loid) bioavailability through Earth's history. The origin of phagotrophic eukaryotes must have postdated the Great Oxidation Event (GOE) in agreement with redox-dependent modification of metal(loid) bioavailability for phagotrophic poisoning. However, this predatory mechanism is predicted to have evolved much later - closer to the origin of the multicellular metazoans and the evolutionary development of the immune systems.

RESUMO

Objective: To systematically evaluate the risk factors for perimenopausal depression in Chinese women and to provide a basis for screening perimenopausal women at high-risk for depression. Methods: A computer search of seven databases, including SinoMed, PubMed, Web of Science, and so on, and two clinical trial registries on the risk factors for depression in Chinese women during perimenopause was conducted for meta-analysis. The search time limit was from the establishment of the database to December 2022. The included case-control and cross-sectional studies were evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale (NOS) and criteria developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Results: A total of 15 papers with 12,168 patients and 18 risk factors were included. Meta-analysis results showed that the risk factors for depression in perimenopausal women were relationship quality [OR = 1.23, 95% confidence intervals (1.03, 1.46)], marital status [OR = 2.49, 95% CI (1.77, 3.50)], family income [OR = 1.48 95% CI (1.10, 2.00)], comorbid chronic diseases [OR = 2.39, 95% CI (1.93, 2.95)], exercise status [OR = 1.63, 95% CI (1.26, 2.11)], perimenopausal syndrome [OR = 2.36, 95% CI (2.11, 2.63)], age [OR = 1.04, 95% CI (1.01, 1.07)], and stressful events [OR = 12.14, 95% CI (6.48, 22.72)], and social support was a protective factor [OR = 0.76, 95% CI (0.63, 0.91), p < 0.05]. Conclusion: Based on the exploration of risk factors for perimenopausal depression in Chinese women, we aimed to provide guidance for the screening of risk factors for depression in perimenopausal women and thereby reduce the incidence of depression. RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to identify molecules from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with potential activity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its variants. METHODS: We applied the Apriori algorithm to identify important combinations of herbs in the TCM prescriptions for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Then, we explored the active components and core targets using network pharmacology. In addition, the molecular docking approach was performed to investigate the interaction of these components with the main structural and non-structural proteins, as well as the mutants. Furthermore, their stability in the binding pockets was further evaluated with the molecular dynamics approach. RESULTS: A combination of Amygdalus Communis Vas., Ephedra Herba and Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi was selected as the important herbal combination, and 11 main components and 20 core targets against COVID-19 were obtained. These components, including luteolin, naringenin, stigmasterol, baicalein, and so on, were the potentially active compounds against COVID-19. The binding affinity of these compounds with the potential targets was as high as the positive controls. Among them, baicalein could interfere with multiple targets simultaneously, and it also interfered with the interaction between spike protein and angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptor. Additionally, almost all the systems reached stability during dynamics simulation. CONCLUSION: The combination of A. communis, Ephedra Herba and S. baicalensis was the most important herbal combination for the treatment of COVID-19. Baicalein may be a potential candidate against SARS-CoV-2 and its variants. Please cite this article as: Song JB, Zhao LQ, Wen HP, Li YP. RESUMO

Accumulation of phenolic acids, such as p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA), 3,4 dihydroxybenzoic acid (PA), and cinnamic acid (CA) causes a decline in tea plantation soil quality. Bacterial strains that can balance phenolic acid autotoxicity (PAA) in tea tree rhizosphere soil are used to improve tea plantation soil. In this study, the effects of Pseudomonas fluorescens ZL22 on soil restoration and PAA regulation in tea plantations were investigated. ZL22 carries a complete pathway for degrading PHBA and PA to acetyl coenzyme A. ZL22 can colonise and reduce PHBA by 96% and PA by 98% in tea rhizosphere soil within 30 days. The cooccurrence of ZL22 and low CA levels further promotes lettuce seed growth and substantially increases tea production. ZL22 effectively regulates PAA to a safe level in rhizospheric soil, alleviating the inhibition of microbiota by PAA, increases the abundance of genera associated with soil N, C, and S cycling, and creates optimum pH (approximately 4.2) and organic carbon (approximately 25 g/kg), and available N (approximately 62 mg/kg) contents for secondary metabolite accumulation in tea leaves. The application of P. fluorescens ZL22 controls PAA, which synergistically improves plant growth and soil nutrition, thereby promoting tea production and quality.

RESUMO

This paper examined the impacts of different pretreatments on the characteristics of biochar and its adsorption behavior for Pb2+. Biochar with combined pretreatment of water-washing and freeze-drying (W-FD-PB) performed a maximum adsorption capacity for Pb2+ of 406.99 mg/g, higher than that of 266.02 mg/g on water-washing pretreated biochar (W-PB) and 188.21 mg/g on directly pyrolyzed biochar (PB). This is because the water-washing process partially removed the K and Na, resulting in the relatively enriched Ca and Mg on W-FD-PB. And the freeze-drying pretreatment broke the fiber structure of pomelo peel, favoring the development of a fluffy surface and large specific surface area during pyrolysis. Quantitative mechanism analysis implied that cation ion exchange and precipitation were the driving forces in Pb2+ adsorption on biochar, and both mechanisms were enhanced during Pb2+ adsorption on W-FD-PB. Furthermore, adding W-FD-PB to Pb-contaminated soil increased the soil pH and significantly reduced the availability of Pb.

RESUMO

The heterogeneous Fenton-like systems induced by Fe-containing minerals have been largely applied for the degradation of organic pollutants. However, few studies have been conducted on biochar (BC) as an additive to Fenton-like systems mediated by iron-containing minerals. In this study, the addition of BC prepared at different temperatures was found to significantly enhance the degradation of contaminants in the tourmaline-mediated Fenton-like system (TM/H2O2) using Rhodamine B (RhB) as the target contaminant. Furthermore, the hydrochloric acid-modified BC prepared at 700 °C (BC700(HCl)) could achieve complete degradation of high concentrations of RhB in the BC700(HCl)/TM/H2O2 system. Free radical quenching experiments showed that TM/H2O2 system removed contaminants mainly mediated by the free radical pathway. After adding BC, the removal of contaminants is mainly mediated by the non-free radical pathway in BC700(HCl)/TM/H2O2 system which was confirmed by the Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). In addition, BC700(HCl) had broad feasibility in the degradation of other organic pollutants (Methylene Blue (MB) 100%, Methyl Orange (MO) 100%, and tetracycline (TC) 91.47%) in the tourmaline-mediated Fenton-like system. Possible pathways for the degradation of RhB by the BC700(HCl)/TM/H2O2 system were also proposed.

RESUMO

Here a multiple heavy metal and antibiotic resistant bacterium Cupriavidus necator C39 (C. necator C39) was isolated from a Gold-Copper mine in Zijin, Fujian, China. C. necator C39 was able to tolerate intermediate concentrations of heavy metal(loid)s in Tris Minimal (TMM) Medium (Cu(II) 2 mM, Zn(II) 2 mM, Ni(II) 0.2 mM, Au(III) 70 µM and As(III) 2.5 mM). In addition, high resistance to multiple antibiotics was experimentally observed. Moreover, strain C39 was able to grow on TMM medium containing aromatic compounds such as benzoate, phenol, indole, p-hydroxybenzoic acid or phloroglucinol anhydrous as the sole carbon sources. The complete genome of this strain revealed 2 circular chromosomes and 1 plasmid, and showed the closest type strain is C. necator N-1T based on Genome BLAST Distance Phylogeny. The arsenic-resistance (ars) cluster GST-arsR-arsICBR-yciI and a scattered gene encoding the putative arsenite efflux pump ArsB were identified on the genome of strain C39, which thereby may provide the bacterium a robust capability for arsenic resistance. Genes encoding multidrug resistance efflux pump may confer high antibiotic resistance to strain C39. Key genes encoding functions in degradation pathways of benzene compounds, including benzoate, phenol, benzamide, catechol, 3- or 4-fluorobenzoate, 3- or 4-hydroxybenzoate and 3,4-dihydroxybenzoate, indicated its potential for degrading those benzene compounds.

RESUMO

Humic substances (HSs) are key indicators of compost maturity and are important for the composting process. The application of additives is generally considered to be an efficient and easy-to-master strategy to promote the humification of composting and quickly caught the interest of researchers. This review summarizes the recent literature on humification promotion by additives in the composting process. Firstly, the organic, inorganic, biological, and compound additives are introduced emphatically, and the effects and mechanisms of various additives on composting humification are systematically discussed. Inorganic, organic, biological, and compound additives can promote 5.58-82.19%, 30.61-50.92%, 2.3-40%, and 28.09-104.51% of humification during composting, respectively. Subsequently, the advantages and disadvantages of various additives in promoting composting humification are discussed and indicated that compound additives are the most promising method in promoting composting humification. Finally, future research on humification promotion is also proposed such as long-term stability, environmental impact, and economic feasibility of additive in the large-scale application of composting. It is aiming to provide a reference for future research and the application of additives in composting.

RESUMO

Bacterial adaptation to extreme environments is often mediated by horizontal gene transfer (HGT) via genetic mobile elements. Nevertheless, phage-mediated HGT conferring bacterial arsenic resistance determinants has rarely been investigated. In this study, a highly arsenite and antimonite resistant bacterium, Citrobacter portucalensis strain Sb-2, was isolated, and genome analysis showed that several putative arsenite and antimonite resistance determinants were flanked or embedded in prophages. Furthermore, an active bacteriophage carrying one of the ars clusters (arsRDABC arsR-yraQ/arsP) was obtained and sequenced. These genes encoding putative arsenic resistance determinants were induced by arsenic and antimony as demonstrated by RT-qPCR, and one gene arsP/yraQ of the ars cluster was shown to give resistance to MAs(III) and Rox(III), thereby showing function. Here, we were able to directly show that these phage-mediated arsenic and antimony resistances play a significant role in adapting to As- and Sb-contaminated environments. In addition, we demonstrate that this phage is responsible for conferring arsenic and antimony resistances to C. portucalensis strain Sb-2.

RESUMO

Recent results revealed that considerable Pb accumulation in plants is possible under specific soil conditions that make Pb phytoavailable. In this review, the sources and transformations of Pb in soils, the interaction of Pb with bacteria and specifically the microbiota in the soil, factors and mechanisms of Pb uptake, translocation and accumulation in plants and Pb toxicity in living organisms are comprehensively elaborated. Specific adsorption and post-adsorption transformations of Pb in soil are the main mechanisms affecting the mobility, bioavailability, and toxicity of Pb. The adsorption ability of Pb largely depends on the composition and properties of soils and environmental conditions. Microbial impact on Pb mobility in soil and bioavailability as well as bacterial resistance to Pb are considered. Specific mechanisms conferring Pb-resistance, including Pb-efflux, siderophores, and EPS, have been identified. Pathways of Pb entry into plants as well as mechanisms of in planta Pb transport are poorly understood. Available evidence suggests the involvement of Ca transporters, organic acids and the phytochelatin pathway in Pb transport, mobility and detoxification, respectively.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between gene polymorphisms and clinical factors with the concentrations of valproic acid (VPA) in adult patients who underwent neurosurgery in China. METHODS: A total of 531 serum concentration samples at steady state were collected from 313 patients to develop a population pharmacokinetic (PPK) model. Data analysis was performed using nonlinear mixed effects modeling. Covariates included demographic parameters, biological characteristics, and genetic polymorphism. Bootstrap evaluation showed that the final model was stable. Sensitive analysis was performed to verify the relationship between gene polymorphisms and concentrations of VPA. Linear regression was used to analyze the relationship between VPA concentration, ANKK1, and daily dosage. RESULTS: In the recruited patients, 17 of 25 single-nucleotide polymorphism distributions were consistent with the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. A one-compartment model with first-order absorption and elimination was developed for VPA injections. VPA clearance was significantly influenced by three variables: sex (17.41% higher in male than female patients), body weight, and the ANKK1 gene. Typical values for the elimination clearance and the volume of central compartment were 0.614 L/min and 23.5 L, respectively. The model evaluation indicated the stable and precise performance of the final model. After sensitive analysis using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests, we found that patients with AA alleles had higher VPA concentrations than those with GG and AG alleles. Linear regression models showed that gene polymorphisms of ANKK1 had little effects on VPA concentration. CONCLUSION: A PPK model of VPA in Chinese Han patients was successfully established; this can be helpful for model-informed precision-dosing approaches in clinical patient care, and for exploring the mechanism of VPA-induced weight gain.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Most of the recent research on nightmare distress and depressive symptoms has focused on adolescents and students, with less research on the nurse population. Emergency department nurses are at high risk for nightmare distress and depressive symptoms, but no studies have been conducted to explore the relationship between the two; thus, further investigation is needed. AIM: To understand the relationship between nightmare distress and depressive symptoms among emergency department nurses in China. METHODS: A convenience sampling method was used to select 280 emergency department nurses from nine provinces, including Jiangxi, Sichuan, Jiangsu, and Shanxi Provinces. The Chinese version of the Nightmare Distress Questionnaire and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) were administered. RESULTS: Emergency department nurses' nightmare distress scores were positively associated with depressive symptom scores (r = 0.732), depressed affect (r = 0.727), somatic symptoms (r = 0.737), and interpersonal difficulty (r = 0.647). Further multiple linear regression analyses showed that education level, work pressure, self-reported health, and CES-D scores were factors that influenced nightmare distress among Chinese emergency department nurses (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Nightmare distress is closely associated with depressive symptoms in Chinese emergency department nurses, and early intervention is recommended for professionals with this type of sleep disorder to reduce the occurrence of depressive symptoms.

RESUMO

Terahertz logic gates play a vital role in optical signal processing and terahertz digitization. Herein, a strategy to design an all-optical terahertz logic gate device composed of metamaterials with a semiconductor-metal hybrid is proposed; accordingly, a concrete logic gate composed of Ge embedded-in Au stripe supported by a Si board is presented theoretically. Simulation results reveal the dependence of the terahertz transmission spectra on the different illuminations in the device. Based on the illumination-transmission response, the designed device can realize the NOR or OR Boolean operation. The effects of the width of the Ge-Au stripe as well as the Si board on the transmission spectra and logic performance were also investigated.

RESUMO

Budesonide (Bud), one of the most widely used lung medicines, is currently used as a repurposing medicine for immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) treatment. The progression of IgAN is related to inflammation involving macrophages and podocytes. The present study aimed to explore the effects of Bud on classically activated (M1)/alternatively activated (M2) macrophage polarization and podocyte injury under lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory stress in vitro. Anti-inflammatory bioinformation of Bud was identified based on the Gene Expression Omnibus database. RAW264.7 cells were treated with normal medium, LPS, curcumin (Cur, positive control), or Bud 5, 10, or 20 µM. The expression levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), TNF-α, mannose receptor (CD206) and arginase (Arg)-1 were quantified by western blotting. The collected supernatants from macrophages were termed (Nor)MS, (LPS)MS, (Cur)MS and (Bud)MS. The TNF-α, IL-1ß and nitric oxide (NO) levels in the supernatants were evaluated by ELISA and Griess assay. The podocytes were cultured in different supernatants and their survival rates were assessed by bromodeoxyuridine assay. TNF signaling is an important pathway by which Bud exerts anti-inflammatory activities. Compared with the LPS group, 5, 10 and 20 µM Bud significantly increased Arg-1 and decreased iNOS expression (Six: P<0.05) and 20 µM Bud significantly increased Arg-1 and CD206 and decreased iNOS and TNF-α expression (Four: P<0.05). Cur significantly decreased iNOS and TNF-α expression (Two: P<0.05). Compared with LPS, 5, 10 and 20 µM Bud and Cur significantly decreased TNF-α, IL-1ß and NO levels (All: P<0.05). The podocyte survival rates of (Bud)MS and (Cur)MS were significantly higher than those of (LPS)MS (Four: P<0.05). The protective effect of Bud on podocyte injury is related to its modulation of M1/M2 polarization.
